Ms Azul the KingFisher

September 21, 2016

Last Friday was a harvest moon / full moon and the forces of nature were in force! Of course with 8 fur babies in our house, a full moon usually means a lot of activity of crazy kitties and late night potty breaks. But this harvest moon was an exception! We had a very special visitor!

belted-kingfisher

We were just lounging on the couch late afternoon after our normal outside playtime, when all of the sudden we heard a cicada in the house. Or that’s what it sounded like because we sees lots of cicadas outside. So of course we went off to investigate to make sure Zaida Monkey didn’t get to it and eat it, but we just couldn’t find anything so just maybe it was coming from outside since the door was open. Sooo, we went back to the couch and I laid on Mommers lap while we put on a movie.

“KaKaKaKaKaKaaaa!!!KaKaKaKaKaKaaaa!!!” Oh my doggie what is that?!? It sounds like a birdie in our house! Mommers lets go quick! “Milk, Arabella – stay” said Mommers “I have to make sure Zaida doesn’t get it”. Okay Okay but show us what you find Mommers!

kingfisher-in-bathroomMommers went into the bathroom, and this lady bird with a mohawk was just hiding behind the toilet and making a bunch of noise. Well, of course she couldn’t stay there, so with just a bit of encouragement, she flew out! But RUH ROH!!!! I sees a bird flying up high in the living room ceiling. It’s flapping weird and so scared. Now it’s in the kitchen, and oops – back to the living room wall. Ker plunk! Nose dive into the wall. Something is just not right with this birdie! Mommers is trying to find a box at this point cause we are worried about Ms Azul. Finally it lands awkwardly on the table, but it’s flying was so wobbly that it got it’s wing stuck in the grove between poles.

Mommers already had some towels in her hands, and member she’s tryikingfisher-in-towelng to save a birdie while in a wheelchair and moving slow, so this was not easy. But since the lady songbird was stuck, Mommers was able to carefully take the towels and wrap around this mowhawked beauty. The scared kingfisher bird instantly relaxed! She knew that we were just trying to help her! She quit snapping her long scary beak and just let the Mommers hold her and wipe her down along her beak and mohawk. You see, she had become covered in spider webs and cat fur, and other mess while flying around in our house.

milk-with-kingfisherMs Azul is now safely in a large cardboard box. But we just can’ts keep her there. What are we gonna do?! It’s late now on Friday so we can’t get a ride to the emergency vet and of course the phone broke this week…Thank doggie fur the online animal groups for Mommers to pawticipate. There’s just gotta be somepawdy there that can help!

With Mommers call fur help (bol, get it??) she spoke with the head of Valiant Animal Rescue AND found a volunteer hooman lady from Center for Birds of Prey in Awendaw, SC. Whew! Nobody could get Ms Azul that nite, BUT the volunteer from Birds of Prey said she would bekingfisher-in-box there first thing in the mawnin. Thanksaroo to these two ladies, we knew how to keep Ms Azul safe fur the nite, sleeping in her cardboard box safe away from any lurking predator kitties (uuhh, uuumm, Zaida…I’m looking at you!) We were a bit worried, but Saturday am we looked in the box, and there was the sleeping songbird beauty, still safe and sound! Wooferoo!

BUT, it gets even better! The Birds of Prey volunteer comes to our house and says Ms Azul the Kingfisher doesn’t look as bad as webelted-kingfisher-mohawk thought, but she was going to take her to the center to be assessed and she would pawbably get some medicines. After they assessed Ms, Azul, the center said it was just really bad bruising and no broken wings. Thank Dog! But here’s the best part!! They were having a special group presentation at Birds of Prey that day, so they decided to release Ms Azul in front of a large crowd. How pawmazing is that! Her songbird debut release was a display of magnificence for lots of hoomans to see. Of course Ms Azul had to show off, flying around and then ultimately diving straight fur the water like a true kingfisher – lunch time!!!

http://milkpaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/kinfisher-release.mp4

I am so glad Ms Azul flew into my house to find help. She was so beautiful and helping to rescue a bird was an exciting experience. We learned so much – about birds and our local wildlife rescues! Some say birds in a house are bad luck, but we agree with the humans who say a bird in the house is good luck and are so glad she flew into ours!

Pawlease learn how to help an injured bird before it happens! If you are in the Lowcountry, you can contact The Center for the Birds of Prey, but they have great resources on their website fur everypawdy worldwide! I am so glad this wildlife bird center exists here and were able to help! Pawlease go visit their page and visit their facility if you have the chance!

A New Life for Lovabull Lucy

September 3, 2016

My Saturday Staffie Spotlight goes to Lucy 2! Lucy is a staffordshire terrier mix, one of the many breeds included in the pitbull category of pups. After living in the same home fur her entire life, she was surrendered by her “owner” to Hallie Hill Animal Sanctuary in Hollywood, SC. This lovabull senior pitbull dog has been at the dog rescue fur 18 months and desperately needs a new home to live out the rest of her beautibull days!pitbull tongue out

Unfortunately, when hoomans give an animal up, they don’t always tell the whole story, so there are just some things we don’t know. Her hoomans said she got into a scuffle with another dog, but she had lived with that pup fur almost 10 years with no problems! Something just isn’t rite about that situation, but we will never know fur sure. What we do know fur sure is that this staffie pitbull pup wants nothing more than to cuddle up and be your bestest cuddle bug.

Smiling staffie pitbull

Lucy couldn’t be in a better place as far as dog rescues go – Hallie Hill is truly an animal sanctuary where dogs have their own space with long runs. But I firmly believe that ALL pups should have a furever home. A place to call their own. A place where hoomans wuv them and pamper them – yup! You heards me!!! And Lucy 2 is no exception!

This lovabull senior pitbull is over 10 years old and needs you to give her a home! Lucy 2 is spayed and up to date on all of her yuckies (vaccinations) and is heartworm negative (HW-). As you can sees, she just wuvs to laugh and begs fur belly rubs! She also wuvs to go on walks and get treats. She would pawbably do best in a single pet home cause she deserves all the attention and needs to be in the spotlight for her senior dog days, but meet and greets are welcome!

Are you the pawfect family fur Lucy 2?!? Then pawlease contact Hallie Hill Animal Sanctuary at 843-889-3713 to finds out more about this adoptable pitbull! Of course, she needs her story shared so she can be seen and find her new hoomans, so shout it out to the world! 18 months is too long to live without a true home with soft beds and doggy bones!  See Lucy 2 the Staffy in Action in her Debut Video

Pierre the Tripawd is Looking for a Service Human

August 20, 2016

smiling black pitbull dogMeet Pierre the Pibble Tripawd! He’s my Saturday Spotlight looking fur his furever home! This handsome 3 year old fella was found as a stray wandering the roads of Orangeburg, SC. He’s had a ruff start to life, being found with a hurt leg and suffering from parvo. Thanks to some pawsome hoomans, Pierre had his leg amputated to take away his pain and he has fully recovered from the nasty P word. And we all know it’s a tuff thing to fight off so this boy is some special tuff stuff that will be around for awhile!

Lucky for Pierre, Eunoia Rescue of Charleston, SC stepped in and pulled him from the animal shelter to give him a chance at life after surviving all of this mess! I means, after overcoming parvo and having a leg chopped off (we don’t know how or why), they just had to make sure Pierre wasn’t let down by hoomans again! BUT, here’s the problem – because Eunoia is a foster based rescue and there are no foster homes available fur him rite now with their dog rescue, Pierre is having to stay in boarding. Although he’s not in a shelter environment anymore, thank dog!, it’s just not a great place for a doggie to live. It’s not a home. Not to mention it takes a bunch of bones (money) that Eunoia Rescue could be using to help save other dogs’ lives!

smiling pitbull in carNow that you know you already want to bring Pierre the Pibble Tripawd into your home, lets me tell you a little bit more! In a home setting, Pierre is the MOST lovabull pup in the world! He wants to cuddle and lay beside you and he evens knows if you are happy or sad and need some extra pittie wuvin’! And guess what?? He likes ice cubes just like me – I mean, he wouldn’t really even be a dog if he didn’t would he? bol! And look at his face! He seems like he can be a bit goofy like me too! Did I mention he wuvs to lay in the sun?!?

So this is where Pierre needs a service hooman! He doesn’t need you to carry him around or anything like that, smiling pitbull on deck he just needs a best furiend. He needs a hooman that will give him guidance and unconditional wuv and continue his training. He’s not a dog that you’ll be able to take to the dog park or puppy parties, but that doesn’t mean the two of you can’t go on lots of adventures – it just means he likes hoomans more and will be your loyal companion!  Because he’s such a people pleaser, Pierre does need to be in a home with no other pets, and would do best with older kiddos (13+). He’s even getting weekly dog training with K9 Good Manners and is excelling with progress!

smiling black pitbull walkingPierre desperately needs to get out of boarding. It’s just no life fur a dog. Although he would prefer a furever home, a long-term foster home would be a pawmazing place fur him to continue to thrive and progress with his training. Pierre needs to be able to depend on you and for you to give him a chance to show you he’s the best pup in the world!

If you are interested in fostering or adopting Pierre, pawlease contact Alicia with Eunoia Rescue in Charleston, SC at EunoiaRescue@gmail.com or by calling 843-367-9797.

Introducing Pee Wee: Tails from Thailand

August 1, 2016

Pitbull on ground with Soi Dogs

Pee Wee is a pit bull with Soi Dogs in search of a home!

In the beautiful land of Thailand lies an unbarkable truth that must be voiced. Dogs and puppies of all types and sizes were used in Thailand’s meat trade industry, and are now being smuggled into Vietnam, placing thousands of dogs in horrendous and abusive conditions until their inevitable and cruel death. Enter Soi Dog Foundation. This animal rescue group is working relentlessly to rescue these dogs, and to help transform the lives of the hoomans involved by helping them find new ways to support their families. Through their pawsionate staff and volunteers, the Soi Dog Foudation helped enact legislation to ban the meat trade industry in Thailand, has spayed and neutered over 100,000 dogs and cats, and saved the lives of many more by feeding dogs at Thailand temples, and housing over 400 dogs at their rescue shelter, and providing lifesaving veterinary care!

So now I would like to introduced to you the beautibull lady Pee Wee! She was dumped off at a temple in Phuket Thailand when she was just a tiny puppy, but the monks were scared because she was a pitbull! (when is the world Pee Wee Pitbull with Soi DogsEVER gonna learn that pit bulls are the MOST wuvable breed ever?!?) Luckily fur Pee Wee, the monks contacted the Soi Dog Foundation so she would have a chance at life and not be sold to the meat trade. She wuves people and is very energetic, but she’s been at Soi Dogs for nine months and needs a furever home where she can run and play! She would thrive the best with a structured environment and an active family with confidence and lots of wuv to give her. I bet she would just wuv some belly rubs and a warm cozy bed, and would give you slobbery kisses in return. I’m an energetic pup, so like me and other pit bulls, Pee Wee would need to have lots of time to run, play fetch, and some brain games and chew toys to keep her from getting bored!

I has to gives thanksaroos to my furiend Hazel the Pitbull and her momma. Hazel fights to end pit bull discrimination and breed specific legislation (BSL); she is an ambassabull to our breed and has started Hazel the Pitbull Foundation. Recently her momma spent three weeks volunteering at Soi Dog Foundation, fell in wuv with Pee Wee and just knew she had to finds her a home. BecPee Wee Happy Pitbull with Soi Dogsause Pee Wee is a pit bull, she can only live in certain countries and Hazel can’t find her a home in the UK or NZ due to restrictions (yes! we need legislation changed worldwide!). That’s why she asked me to share the story of this beautibull girl! So Pupsters! Here’s your newest calling – SHARE Pee Wee’s story so she can get that new furever home quickly and gets out of Thailand. She’s being cared fur, but we all know rescue shelter life is no life fur a dog.

If you live in the UPee Wee Pitbull with Soi DogsS or Canada and are interested in adopting Pee Wee and finding out more information about her, pawlease paw an email to the Adoption Manager for Soi Dogs at teresa@soidog.org!

Clear the Shelters 2016

July 23, 2016

It’s National Clear the Shelters Day and that means wonderful things fur you and our furry furiends that are stuck living in shelters! Today, and this weekend, NBC & Telemundo news media & PetCo are teaming up with local animal shelters across the country with a huge goal in mind – to clear every single last adoptable animal out of the shelters!! It’s the biggest animal adoption initiative in one day ever!Clear the Shelters 2016

What does this mean fur you, the hoomans? Many shelters are able to offer fee-waived (free) or fee-reduced adoptions to you when adopting a new cat or dog. This means you can saves some bones to get new toys or treats fur your newest family member. It’s like getting a toy at Christmas that needs batteries – you wouldn’t forgets those. So go meet your new bestest furiend, and use those saved bones to get some natural treats and chew toys. If you’re fortunate enuff to not worry about bones, maybe you can pass your saved bones to help another furry furiend finds it’s new home – many shelters call these angel adopters – and you still WIN! You gets a new furfamily member, AND you gets to know you helped another hooman AND another dog or cat find a furever home.

How about the animals?? Well, I don’t really think I needs to answer this question, cause I think we ALL know what it means! At least us furry and scaley ones do. It means that every animal that finds a new furever home gets to break free from jail! It’s a get out of puppy prison for free pass! It’s an escape from pergatory card! It means a new leash on life! It means furever wuv, food, cuddles, and playtime. It means FREEDOM!!!!

Clear the Shelters 2016 graphicAnd what’s in it fur the shelters? It’s certainly not a money thing, cause it costs alot to take care of an animal in a shelter, even the shelters where animals only get minimal treatment. Reduced or free adoptions certainly don’t help a shelter cover their bones. Media sponsorships can help, but it’s often in publicity trade versus bones (dollars). BUT, what it does do is several good things! By working with local media, more awareness is brought to the shelters – this way hoomans know where they are located, can offer volunteer time, donate, and hopefully adopt! It also creates space. Much needed space. You see, the animal shelters across the country, even the bestest and the worstest, are ALWAYS full. And if they are full, that means many animals are turned away and left on the streets. For high kill shelters, it means precious puppies, kuddly kitties, pawsome pitbulls, and many more are euthanized. Of course the first to hit that list are the old, the sick, and the pitbulls. For no kill shelters, it means they turn away animals and put them on a wait list, which can then lead to hunger and abuse. So…when dogs and cats are adopted from a shelter, and if a shelter can adopt out all of its adoptable dogs and cats, that means they can take in more animals that need help, shelter, and homes.

adelyne pitbull summerville spca

Adelyne is an adoptable pitbull at the Summerville SPCA Clear the Shelters 2016 event

So what can you do to make a difference? Share the word! Tell your friends and furiends its Clear the Shelters Day! Even if your local shelter is not participating, call to see if they have adoption specials – share this informaiton even if you can’t adopt. And if you have more time on your paws fur more than a quick phone call and social media share, GO TO THE SHELTER and see how you can help by volunteering your time.

Let’s #SaveThePupppies everypawdy. It’s gonna take all of us and Clear the Shelters is a great program creating awareness to help save the lives of dogs & puppies, cats & kittens, iguanas & lizards, bunnies & guinea pigs, and yes even horses, cows & pigs!

Meet Frazier: The Transgender Dog

July 22, 2016

Meet Frazier: a young male brindle pitbull full of life and love, yet the victim of cruel animal abuse when his “owner’s” father cut off his dog with severed peniswee wee so he couldn’t go potty. He was found several weeks ago on Frazier Road emaciated, just skin and bones, and covered in ticks and fleas, heart worm positive, and missing his penis. I can’t tells you much more though, because Fray is the subject of an ongoing investigation in Marlboro County, South Carolina.

Thanksaroo to our furiends at Veterinary Specialty Care, Frazier underwent surgery to fix his injuries, and has been treated and cared for at the facility ever since. Because Frazier couldn’t go potty and his wee wee had been severed, he became a transgender pup, so now he pees like a lady. But hey, no paws pointing here, cause everypawdy says I pee like a girl too! Hoomans have such restrictions on what is normal! Sheesh! After so many weeks of living in and out of an animal hospital, Fray is starting to get depressed and needs to get out. That’s where we come in!

Frazier on @konasukibones instagramYou see, I was pawing some hearts with my Instagram profile when I came across a foto of a handsome fella with a short description on @konasukibones‘ page, and I was outraged. (I had missed the previous posts on Frazier cause everypawdy knows I’ve been gone fur awhile) So, I asked her to message me some info so I could share this boy’s story. And when I didn’t paw back quick enuff, she passionately started tagging and begging me to help find this pawsome pitbull a home before he has to be returned to the shelter. Cause here’s the thing Pupsters, if he has to go back to the shelter, he will most likely hit the euthanization list immediately. Yuppers, you heard rite. It’s a high rate kill shelter and we all know pitbulls, especially one with “problems”, don’t last very long. This is where Frazier needs our help!

frazier pitbull in lapFrazier needs a home! Because he is still part of an investigation, it would be a foster to adopt process, which means you would start out as an approved foster, and then would finalize adoption once all the legal mumble jumble is complete. (Trust me, it’s purdy simple cause that’s how we gots my Zaida monkey sissy kitty.) But anydog, here’s what I CAN tell you about Frazier…

Frazier is loveabull! Frazier wuvs kiddos! Frazier wuvs other doggies! Frazier has healed! He’s been staying with one of the VetMans some, and he’s been great with other dogs, cats (kinda shys away from the bol – what smart doggie wouldn’t?!?), and even the tiny hoomans! He wuvs belly rubs, and playing with toys, and enjoys a good snuggle! He’s still finishing up his heartworm treatment, but that’s almost done!

pitbull with kidsPawlease pawlease consider adopting Frazier. He’s a great pup who really needs a furever home and a second chance at life. Give him the future he deserves – I cans guaranpuptee that you won’t regrets it!

For serious inquires, pawlease contact Veterinary Special Care of Mt Pleasant at 843-216-7554 and ask to speak with Dogtor Schlicksup or Dogtor Letra. Frazier is in the Charleston, SC area so you will be able to meet him; adoption will be finalized through Marlboro County Humane Society.
