Clear the Shelters 2016

July 23, 2016

It’s National Clear the Shelters Day and that means wonderful things fur you and our furry furiends that are stuck living in shelters! Today, and this weekend, NBC & Telemundo news media & PetCo are teaming up with local animal shelters across the country with a huge goal in mind – to clear every single last adoptable animal out of the shelters!! It’s the biggest animal adoption initiative in one day ever!Clear the Shelters 2016

What does this mean fur you, the hoomans? Many shelters are able to offer fee-waived (free) or fee-reduced adoptions to you when adopting a new cat or dog. This means you can saves some bones to get new toys or treats fur your newest family member. It’s like getting a toy at Christmas that needs batteries – you wouldn’t forgets those. So go meet your new bestest furiend, and use those saved bones to get some natural treats and chew toys. If you’re fortunate enuff to not worry about bones, maybe you can pass your saved bones to help another furry furiend finds it’s new home – many shelters call these angel adopters – and you still WIN! You gets a new furfamily member, AND you gets to know you helped another hooman AND another dog or cat find a furever home.

How about the animals?? Well, I don’t really think I needs to answer this question, cause I think we ALL know what it means! At least us furry and scaley ones do. It means that every animal that finds a new furever home gets to break free from jail! It’s a get out of puppy prison for free pass! It’s an escape from pergatory card! It means a new leash on life! It means furever wuv, food, cuddles, and playtime. It means FREEDOM!!!!

Clear the Shelters 2016 graphicAnd what’s in it fur the shelters? It’s certainly not a money thing, cause it costs alot to take care of an animal in a shelter, even the shelters where animals only get minimal treatment. Reduced or free adoptions certainly don’t help a shelter cover their bones. Media sponsorships can help, but it’s often in publicity trade versus bones (dollars). BUT, what it does do is several good things! By working with local media, more awareness is brought to the shelters – this way hoomans know where they are located, can offer volunteer time, donate, and hopefully adopt! It also creates space. Much needed space. You see, the animal shelters across the country, even the bestest and the worstest, are ALWAYS full. And if they are full, that means many animals are turned away and left on the streets. For high kill shelters, it means precious puppies, kuddly kitties, pawsome pitbulls, and many more are euthanized. Of course the first to hit that list are the old, the sick, and the pitbulls. For no kill shelters, it means they turn away animals and put them on a wait list, which can then lead to hunger and abuse. So…when dogs and cats are adopted from a shelter, and if a shelter can adopt out all of its adoptable dogs and cats, that means they can take in more animals that need help, shelter, and homes.

adelyne pitbull summerville spca

Adelyne is an adoptable pitbull at the Summerville SPCA Clear the Shelters 2016 event

So what can you do to make a difference? Share the word! Tell your friends and furiends its Clear the Shelters Day! Even if your local shelter is not participating, call to see if they have adoption specials – share this informaiton even if you can’t adopt. And if you have more time on your paws fur more than a quick phone call and social media share, GO TO THE SHELTER and see how you can help by volunteering your time.

Let’s #SaveThePupppies everypawdy. It’s gonna take all of us and Clear the Shelters is a great program creating awareness to help save the lives of dogs & puppies, cats & kittens, iguanas & lizards, bunnies & guinea pigs, and yes even horses, cows & pigs!

For 2015, we have been able to raise money via a Valentines drive as a sponsor for the Mardi Gras Pawrade benefitting WEDGR, pull 2 dogs from death row, support a permanent foster, and foster 2 litters of puppies and 2 litters of kittens. We also organized a drive to help the animal rescues affected by the South Carolina flooding in October, and are currently working to raise money for the annual Chili Cook-Off in November to support the Charleston Animal Society.

Adopt a Shelter Pup Month!

October 7, 2015

Pupsters! October is such a pawsome month! It’s Adopt a Shelter Pup Month, and Pitbull Awareness Month! Today I want to share a couple pitties in need here in my home state of SC. As many of you have seen on the news, we have been hit hard with rain and flooding, which has devastated many of our state shelters. So, here are a few pups that could use some extra love and sharing.

Montana - Darlington Co Animal ShelterMONTANA

Montana is a smaller, one year old sweetheart pitbull who would wuv to come live in your home! He is heartworm negative and gets along great with other pups, but finds kitties a bit too exciting. He was taken to Darlington County Animal Shelter after his “owner” abandoned him and 5 other pups! He is eager for training and furever home. FREE transport is available!

Click his foto for his YouTube video premiere!
Adopters pawlease visit www.darlingtonhumane.org  Rescues, contact KimDCHSTiedemann@gmail.com.

Bocephus @ Orangeburg Animal Shelter

BOCEPHUS

Bocephus is a pitbull mix about 2 years old and is pawsome with both pups and cats! He is heartworm negative (yay!) and a super fun pup!

Click his foto for the Friends of Orangeburg Animal Shelter page!
Adopters pawlease email rescuemesc@gmail.com.

Mack the pitbull

MACK

Mack is a bully breed pup that is a 60lb, 2-3 year bundle of wuv!  He is heart worm positive but the Sinbad-Sadie Rescue can raise treatment funds – first he needs out of a rescue-pull-only shelter. Mack has a great personality, very laid back and lovable, A foster home or an adoption home, either will work.

For foster or adoption contact kym.sinbad.sadie@gmail.com

International Assistance Dog Week

August 8, 2015

OH my doggy! I’m learning about IADW, or International Assistance Dog Week late, but I caught it just in time for the last day 🙂  This years IADW is August 2-8, 2015. Thank pawness I’ll know for next year – maybe we will do something special. Did you know there is a whole week dedicated to pups who assist their hoomans?!? How pawsome is that?!?

According to the IADW website, this week is dedicated to:

  • Recognize and honor assistance dogs
  • Raise awareness and educate the public about assistance dogs
  • Honor puppy raisers and trainers
  • Recognize heroic deeds performed by assistance dogs in our communities

This weeks dedication means alot to me and my Mommers cause I am training to be a service dog, or assistance dog for my Mommers (in addition to my therapy dog training!) And guess what, just this week, we were studying a new (to us) form of positive dog training called shaping, and I learned 2, yes 2, new tasks! A task is something that specifically mitigates a disability issue. I learned to pick up my own food bowl and bring it to Mommers AND I learned how to open a drawer by tugging on a rope that’s attached to the knob! I was even able to generalize my ninja drawer pulling skills to another drawer, and am starting to build strength on opening the dreaded heavy freezer drawer! It’s a lot of training, but I’m starting to have fun with the different things I am learning cause we play games and I get treats and lots of praise (ok, sometimes too much praise Mommers – I’m smarter than you think!)

I’m just in the beginning stages of learning tasks, so I’d like to give high paws to all my fellow assistance pups who work for their hoomans everyday and make sure they can live more normal lives and navigate society. Service dogs or assitance dogs are working dogs that deserve the most respect ever! And ‘member, pawlease be aware if a dog is working – we can be easily distracted and ask that you do not touch without asking our hoomans!

<3 MilkSDiT

p.s. I hope to pupdate soon with some fotos of me working 🙂
