OH my doggy! I’m learning about IADW, or International Assistance Dog Week late, but I caught it just in time for the last day 🙂 This years IADW is August 2-8, 2015. Thank pawness I’ll know for next year – maybe we will do something special. Did you know there is a whole week dedicated to pups who assist their hoomans?!? How pawsome is that?!?
According to the IADW website, this week is dedicated to:
- Recognize and honor assistance dogs
- Raise awareness and educate the public about assistance dogs
- Honor puppy raisers and trainers
- Recognize heroic deeds performed by assistance dogs in our communities
This weeks dedication means alot to me and my Mommers cause I am training to be a service dog, or assistance dog for my Mommers (in addition to my therapy dog training!) And guess what, just this week, we were studying a new (to us) form of positive dog training called shaping, and I learned 2, yes 2, new tasks! A task is something that specifically mitigates a disability issue. I learned to pick up my own food bowl and bring it to Mommers AND I learned how to open a drawer by tugging on a rope that’s attached to the knob! I was even able to generalize my ninja drawer pulling skills to another drawer, and am starting to build strength on opening the dreaded heavy freezer drawer! It’s a lot of training, but I’m starting to have fun with the different things I am learning cause we play games and I get treats and lots of praise (ok, sometimes too much praise Mommers – I’m smarter than you think!)
I’m just in the beginning stages of learning tasks, so I’d like to give high paws to all my fellow assistance pups who work for their hoomans everyday and make sure they can live more normal lives and navigate society. Service dogs or assitance dogs are working dogs that deserve the most respect ever! And ‘member, pawlease be aware if a dog is working – we can be easily distracted and ask that you do not touch without asking our hoomans!
p.s. I hope to pupdate soon with some fotos of me working 🙂
Oh boy! Oh boy! I had an amazing time during Pet Fest today at the Palmetto Islands County Park! There were lots of activities and a never ending supply of FREE treats! Yuppers! You heard me! Treats, treats, everywhere!
The event was today and tomorrow from 10am-4pm and sponsored by the Charleston Animal Society (the shelter that rescued me!), Ikon Law who offers pet trusts in case a pet outlives it’s hooman, Crews Subaru (what a fun name!), and Southern Eagle Distributors. There are demonstrations, water to splash in, vendors, treats, pup activities, and more! Pawfect for pups and hoomans, even the little tykes!
I even entered one of the pet contests – the one for cutest dog of course! I didn’t win, but I sure did rock that stage! The three winners were all small breed dogs – what’s up with that?!? I was for sure there would be a big dog represented! But that’s okay 🙂 The big dogs all represented their breed well and we had lots of fun. There were some cool great danes that competed with me. We even had lots of kiddo fans under the stage reaching out to touch us! And we all know that I wuv kiddos!!!
If you can make it tomorrow, here are some of the activities (from the CCPRC website) you get to join in on while listening to live music:
Hiya Pupsters! I’m super excited to announce that I will be participating in the Mardi Gras Pawrade, benefiting Waters Edge Animal
Rescue (WEAR). All pups are invited to attend, with the $15 participation fee going to help pups in need! (Event is free to attend if you don’t want to participate!) Of course, Mardi Gras apparel is encouraged for both pups and hoomans, although I think it should be mandatory for everypawdy!
Here’s the cool part – as the first fundraising project of 2015 for my new organization, I am trying to raise enough money to be sponsor! My goal is $250 to reach the Gold Sponsor Level – this will also let me set up a table where I will be selling PetBox‘s to benefit the rescue as well! Click here to reserve your PetBox in advance. Can’t make the event? Message me and we can still get you the great deal and the profits will still go to WEAR 🙂 (Use MILK20 for a PetBox subscription and receive 10% off, but make sure to take advantage of the MardiPaws Special first!)
*All donations towards my sponsorship can be snail mailed or sent to my PayPal account.
*Please note we are still in the process of filing for a 501(c)3, so we cannot guarantee donations will be tax-deductable at this time. If you would like to donate directly to WEAR, please let them know that donations are for the My Name Is Milk fundraiser. Their non-profit charity number is #P19302.
I am celebrating my first Gotcha Day on January 22, 2015. It will be one year since I was adopted from the Charleston Animal Society! I am so glad I found my furever home!
I have a big announcement I will be making, and so I am asking everypawdy to share my facebook page so I can have more furiends to share the news. I am moving forward in a direction that will be able to help more pups, and I want all my fellow Pupsters to be involved!
